CUENCA

Cuenca is known as the Athens of Ecuador, and one of the most important cultural and artisan centre in the country.

El Cafecito is three blocks from the "Parque Calderón" (the main plaza), at short distances to points of interest such as the old and new Cathedral, the Tomembamba river, and a mulititude of other sites.

In Cuenca you are also close to other tourist sites such as The Cajas National Park, the Inca ruins of Ingapirca (the largest Inca site in Ecuador), and many villages specializing in traditional handicrafts from jewellery to Panama Hats.

Some helpful tips:

  • Taxis from the airport, or main bus station (‘terminal terrestre’), should not cost more than $2.00 to El Cafecito

  • Arriving at Cuenca airport during the day with little baggage, you can use the bus system. From the outside of the airport to the historical centre, take the bus #100 to "Mercado 9 October" we are across from the main entrance.

  • For better prices and selection of Spanish schools or tours such the national parks, climbing, artisan villages ask the staff of El Cafecito.

  • Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted for cash advances and purchases. Some places charge up to 10% surcharge when using your card.

  • Although restaurants add an extra 10% to the bill for services, your waiter will always be very appreciative of an additional tip.
